Joe Childs

 Joe Childs, 89, of Du Quoin, passed away at 5:15 A.M., Sunday, November 5, 2000 at his residence.
Joe was a retired stock broker. From 1946 he was employed as a bookkeeper, coal leasing agent and was in general and life insurance. He became a partner in various auto dealerships and restaurants after 1950. For twenty-six years he was a partner in the Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop. In 1959 he gave up licenses in real estate and general insurance to acquire one as a registered representative on the New York Stock Excahnge.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin. He was a Sacred Heart Choir member from 1927 until his death. During that time he sang many inspiring solos. He was a member of the Du quoin Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Du Quoin Roy Mitchell American Legion Post. He was a US Army Veteran of W.W. II.
Joe was born February 26, 1911 at Du Quoin, Illinois the son of John and Mary Rose ( Konarcik ) Czayo.
He married Helen E. Leming on June 21, 1941 at Sparta, Illinois, she passed away March 28, 1982.
He is survived by two daughters- Mary C. Singaus of Rancho Mirage, CA, Peggy Childs of Homewood, IL, two sons- Joseph A. Childs of Plano, TX, John C. Childs of Du Quoin, IL, one brother- Frank Czayo of Loveland, CO, two sisters- Mary R. Hestand and Ann R. Czayo both of Du Quoin, IL, 8 Grandchildren-Dawn Childs, Stephan Childs, Krysten Childs, Deanna Childs, Jason Childs, Jamie Childs, Katie Childs, Laura Childs and 2 Great GrandchildrenTerry Dunning, Jessica Dunning.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers- John and George and two infant brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, November 9, 2000 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin with Msgr. Harry Jerome officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from 7 A.M. until 9:30 A.M. Thursday. The Rosary was said at 9:30 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
A Knights of Columbus 4th. Degree Chalice Service was held at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.
Military graveside rites were conducted by the Du Quoin Roy Mitchell American Legion Post.
Friends may make memorials to the Sacred Heart Church, United Cerebral Palsy or the Perry County Hospice.
